Mark Hamill

Mark Hamill born September 25, 1951 in Oakland, California to Bill and Sue Hamill.  He was the fourth child of seven.  He has two brothers: Will and Patrick and four sisters: Terry, Jan, Jeanie and Kim.

Hamill always new that he wanted to perform, to be in 'show business'.  When he went to his first circus, he wanted to be IN the circus, when he went to his first Broadway show, he wanted to be in that Broadway show.  His very first role: an angel in a nativity scene at Walsingham Academy in Virginia.

Hamill's parents never did anything to encourage him in his acting pursuits...they DID encourage his brother who wanted to be a doctor, but couldn't understand Mark's aspirations.  Hamill says he lived in  fantasy world all the time, knew the cast lists of shows and who the actors were.  He read books like Sinbad the Sailor and other fantasies.

It wasn't until 7th grade that he tried to make the jump from fantasy world to reality.  He played a burglar in a comedy and got the laughs.  When he was 16 his father, Bill, took him on a business trip to New York City.  Hamill had prepared for the trip by purchasing tickets to the New York shows before they left Virginia. One of the shows was Sweet Charity, he was so impressed by the performance that he wrote letters to every cast member and received two replies.  The first one came from Gwen Verdon and the second from John Wheeler.  Wheeler invited Hamill to visit backstage the next time he was in New York.. When Hamill did return he got to visit both actors and they encouraged him.

When Hamill returned to Virginia he learned that he and his family were moving to Japan they lived there for two years, Hamill finished high school there (Yokosuka High - Nile C. Kinnick High School) and performed in plays produced by the drama department there headed by Jack Burrill (who said that Hamill had the best timing as an actor he'd ever seen.  Hamill dated Japanese girls, got into a little trouble, and went from 'goofball' to president of the student body, typical high school.  He loved it.  "...taxis were cheap and you could take trains all around the country."  Hamill graduated from Yokohama High in 1969.

Hamill's brother was to be married in LA so the family flew from Japan.  Mark stayed behind in LA when the rest of the family went back to Japan.  He enrolled at La City College.

His friend was writing a musical, Antheism E Flat Calipee, the play didn't do anything but, Ann Margaret's manager, Allen Carr, spotted Hamill and was instrumental in getting Hamill a good agent and 10 guest appearances on shows.

In between school and plays he had to make a living.  He worked as a copyboy at Associated Press, a janitor and a soda jerk.  He quit his job  at AP after being disappointed by discovering that reporters were restricted by the managements point of view.

He continued acting working steadily on TV and a 9 month stint on General Hospital.

In 1976 after appearing in over 140 TV shows a friend, Robert Englund (Nightmare on Elm Street) convinced Hamill to try for the part in the Lucas movie.  Englund had already been through a casting call and thought Hamill would be what they were interested in.  Hamill went to the cattle call at Goldwyn Studios in November of 1976, made a brief statement...,'Hi, I'm Mark Hamill. I have two brothers and four sisters, and that was it.  He was NOT convinced, as he had gone through the same process at the 'American Graffiti' cattle call years before.

In February of 1977 though, 6 pages of the Star Wars script was sent to him and he was invited to do a screen test....again, the rest...history.

After Star Wars, roles were hard to come by, people wanted to see him in the same type of roles or nothing at all. He reprised his role again in the Empire Strikes Back, then he and his wife decided to move to NY and he would try the stage before filming Return of the Jedi.  He played the title role in the Elephant Man on Broadway for the final 3 weeks of its run.

In the years that follow ROTJ.  Hamill exhibits his natural affinity and mimicry of voices.  He plays roles in countless animated series, and almost unrecognizable in some.  He has been credited and un-credited in his voice-over work some notable castings in: Superman, Pinky and the Brain, Real adventures of Jonny Quest, Spider-Man, The Tick, Pepper Ann, Powerpuff Girls, Batman: the Animated Series, The Little Mermaid, and the Flash.

Hamill lives with his wife Marilou York, they have two sons and a daughter.  Nathan 1979, Griffin 1983 and Chelsea 1988.  Nathan Hamill appeared as a background character in Episode I: The Phantom Menace 1999.

Was originally cast as David on the TV show Eight is Enough.

Was in an accident, in early 1977, while driving his brand new BMW, 'way too fast....the music was blaring....lost control...spun out and down a 30 ft embankment and crashed the car'.  The accident  fractured a cheekbone and nearly wiped the nose from his face, it took 3 operations to rebuild it.
Hamill asked Lucas if the Wampa scene was written because of the accident and Lucas replied 'No, Luke was always captured by the Wampa'

Hamill was the only actor on the set of TESB that knew that Vader was Luke's father, the rest of the cast and crew heard Vader's line as, 'You don't know the truth.  Obi-Wan killed your father' - the London Sun newspaper headlines 3 days later...ALEC GUINNESS TOP BADDIE IN STAR WARS SEQUEL
