Paul Reubens

Paul Reubens (born Paul Rubenfeld) was born on August 27, 1952 in Peekskill, New York, US, and grew up in Sarasota, Florida.

Reubens was a big fan of the circus due in large part to spending winters with his neighbors the Wallendas and the Zacchinis (part of The Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus who spent their winters in Sarasota.)  By the time he was eleven he had joined the Asolo Theatre and went on to perform with them for the next six years while attending school, graduated from Sarasota high school in 1970.

Reubens went on to attend Boston University for a year before heading on to Hollywood/Los Angeles to pursue performing.  He enrolled at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Valencia, CA (just northeast of Los Angeles) and became an acting major.  He paid the bills during his college years with typical actor-in-progress jobs, including being a Fuller Brush salesman.

By the mid-seventies he'd been in quite a few theatre productions, performed in comedy, been on the Gong Show and eventually joined The Groundlings comedy troupe where Pee-Wee Herman was first forged in 1978.  Later he developed The Pee Wee Herman show that played for five sell-out months in comedy clubs and became a cult favorite with a large following.

The character of Pee-Wee Herman was very popular and trailing the stage show were a few Pee-Wee movies and the award-winning children's TV show, Pee-Wee's Playhouse.

Some rough times were to follow for Reubens with two arrests.  The first of which certainly spelled death for the character of Pee-Wee Herman.  In spite of the difficulties personally Reubens has persevered and gotten on with life and performing.
